Character design Week 1

School work!

So this week we are going to create our own characters for the weekly assignment. I started playing around with shapes and colors to create a face I could work with, or just kickstart my brain.

After some time of thinking, I started to feel disconnected from these test designs. I remembered I made a character just a few months back which might be useful. So I used some time to revamp and improve him.
His name for a short perios was Brycen Brammer, but I changed his first name to Aiden. He feels like a Aiden for some reason...

The character we were supposed to design for the upcoming weeks, are mostly "game characters". Aiden seems more fit for a action game than any other of the designs above. They weren't supposed to be completely realistic, nor too cartoony. Aiden's design works both ways, he is not too realistic with proportions and appearance, and not too cartoony. He surely has the early "Dreamworks" face.
This character wears a giant furry wintercoat and biker gloves. His pants are either leather or denim, unsure about that choise..
His boots is hard durable leather. I see Aiden working at a cold desolated place
in a alternate universe. I have yet to figure out what exactly he is working with. If he was in a game he would be a strong protagonist with a witty side.

I also have to figure out how his hair works....

So the other day a teacher at school let me borrow a Pixar book he got from the exhibition in Amsterdam. I saw this painting of Anton Ego, and suddently realized that he is my favourite Pixar character. So ofcourse I had to draw him. His design is very unique, and Im sad that he only got less than 10 minutes of screentime in Ratatouille. His facial expressions are fantastic to watch as well.

I am trying to challenge myself a bit more and paint things with more "rules" attatched to them. Better poses, lighting, color theory and so forth. So I'm starting out small with a few headshots and see where I go from there. The process of this 3 hour painting is just down below!

I have been watching alot of Chris D'elia's vines lately, and he always makes this one face. So I wanted to try attempt drawing it. Lately I have been terrified of drawing human faces, because it always looks wrong at the start. It discouraged me something intense.
Today wasn't a good day to draw, so that's exactly what I did

. Always draw. Always attempt. Never succeed.

Anyho, this sharpened my observational skills a bit more when it comes to proportions.
Still alot of work to do!
